Scam Alert for Eden Area

NEWS RELEASE

Contact: Lieutenant Clint Simpson

For Release May 7, 2015

The Eden Police Department is issuing an alert for public awareness of a current scam concerning citizens of Eden. The Eden Police Department has received a report of automated phone calls to citizens in Eden stating that the City of Eden has purchased a Life Alert System for all seniors 59 and older and that the bill was completely paid for.  The automated call asks you to dial an option if you are interested in the free system.  Once you dial the option number, the recording states that more information is needed and requests that you enter the information before speaking with a representative.

This automated phone call should be considered a scam. The automated phone call is a common way for the criminal element and scam artist to gather, steal, and use your personal information.  These automated calls are currently showing on caller ID as 919-249-6951.  When attempting to call the phone number back, there is a recording stating that this is not a working number.

Please remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  If you receive a call concerning a Free Life Alert System, do not provide any personal information, simply hang up.
